Introduction to Tessellation

Objective  This is a project-based workshop in which each student will fabricate a beautiful sterling silver honeycomb bead.  Students will learn about tessellation as it applies to 3 dimensional metal work. This is a unique technique that can be used for components in flatware, hollowware, sculpture or jewelry.  Each student will work with a manufactured form to make a small honeycomb tessellation that is the focal element of the bead. Martha will demonstrate how to use the form with or without the hydraulic press.

Skill Level Basic soldering and fabricating skills

Costs and Procedures Tuition for the two day workshop is $200.  Tuition does not include the cost of materials.  A $75 non refundable deposit is required to secure a space in the workshop. The balance is due at the first class. Checks, cash and credit cards are accepted.  Request an invoice to be sent via email that will include instructions to pay by credit card or check.

Materials  Each student must bring the following items with them to the first class:

  • 1 3/4” x 4” silver sheet (22 gauge)
  • 1” x 2” silver sheet (16 gauge)

A Honeycomb Tessellation Form will be provided for each student to use. There is no obligation to purchase the form, but they will be available for purchase at the end of the workshop. The retail price is $150 plus tax. Martha will explain various ways students can make their own honeycomb form if desired.

Even though Martha’s studio is equipped with the necessary hand tools, students are encouraged to bring their own hand tools such as pliers, chisel/flat face plastic hammer, saw, files, etc.
