Open Studio

Martha’s studio will be available to fellow metal smiths several times per month.  She hosted similar gatherings at her studio in Atlanta and helped organize an Open Studio program at the Metal Arts Guild of Georgia.  In addition to having access to a well-equipped studio, the benefits to participants include excellent collaborative possibilities and good times spent with likeminded artists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can take advantage of Open Studio?  Participants must have taken a workshop from Martha and must have previous experience with the equipment.  Martha will be present during Open Studio, but she does not consider this a workshop and will not offer formal instruction.

Is there a fee to participate?  Yes. $8.00 for the first hour in the studio and $3.00 for each additional half or partial half hour.  Martha accepts cash, checks, or credit cards.  The Studio is fully insured; participants must sign a liability waiver.

Do I have to make a reservation?  Yes.  Martha will send out an email to interested colleagues each month.  It will contain a link to a Doodle sign up page listing dates and times of Open Studio.  A maximum of four persons can register for a session.  Start times and finish times are fixed (10:00 AM to 3:00 PM), but participants should feel free to come for part or all of the scheduled session according to their needs.  Reservations are on a first come, first served basis.  If for some reason you must cancel your visit, please let Martha know as others may want to take your place.

What equipment is available?Equipment includes a soldering station, flex shafts, buffer, band saw, anvil, rolling mill, vertical vise, drill press, belt sander, press brake, tumbler, microwave and shear.

A number of other tools are available including stakes, commercial dies for the hydraulic press, embossing dies, pancake dies, silhouette dies, dapping punches, bezel punches, a corrugator, soldering accessories, stumps, disk cutters, and cleaning supplies.

If you have had training from Martha, you can use the hydraulic press and kiln. Contained urethane will be available, but please bring your own urethane sheets if you wish to use them for silhouette dies and other Hydraulic Press processes.

Participants can use the etching setup, but must alert Martha in advance so she can make sure the batteries are charged.  If you are etching please plan to bring your own salt water and ferric nitrate solutions and take them home for proper disposal.

Nitrile gloves and facemasks are available for $1.00 each.

What should I bring with me?  Bring your own hand tools, your project metal, opti-visors, rulers, tape, templates, compass, flex shaft accessories, and consumables such as solder, flux, saw blades, sand paper, oxidizer, etc.

Please come prepared to observe the Studio’s safety protocols: wear closed toed shoes; tie back long hair; have no loose sleeves; remove jewelry that can get caught in equipment.  If you plan to work over the noon hour, bring a lunch!

How do I sign up?  Follow this link to the Doodle site and you will be all set!
